Tuesday Tip #6 – Developing a Career Mindset

Today’s tip is about the importance of a flexible mindset when going through a career transition.

When going through a career transition, you may have chosen to make a proactive change or sometimes it is forced upon you through a redundancy process. Either way,  most people react by searching for jobs and writing resumes.  For most, this will get them back to what they were doing and for a few, that may be okay. However, if you search to look for a career that truly engages you, aligns with your motivations, values and behaviours and fulfils your aspirations the research suggests you need to do a few things first:

  1. Develop high self-awareness of what your aspirations, values and behaviours are.
  2. Research and brainstorm what possible career options could be regardless of what your skillsets are
  3. Constantly challenge yourself to think not about what you have done in the past, think about what you can and want to do in the future

Whilst there still may be limitations dictated by skill-sets, your mindset will be more creative and open to explore the options and opportunities you may not have thought of before.
